In a survey of senior executives from 500 of the biggest companies in Europe, Leeds has broken into Europe’s top 30 best cities for business. It is the first time that Leeds has featured in the annual European Cities Monitor, which looks at the range of factors companies consider when deciding where to locate their business operations.
Meanwhile, a new horizon is emerging in Leeds as developers re-shape the city’s skyline. The distinctive profile of Bridgewater Place can already be seen from miles around and it will soon be joined by the 54 and 32-storey towers of Lumiere, Europe’s tallest residential development. Global commercial property consultants Cushman & Wakefield has just named Leeds as one of Europe’s leading business locations.
The key factors behind this success are access to markets, availability of qualified staff, transport and telecommunications. The European Cities Monitor survey also looked at value for money and the availability of office space – areas in which Leeds scores well above its overall ranking – together with quality of life for employees.
The UK’s leading centre for financial and business services outside London has enjoyed a period of unprecedented growth in output and employment. Further growth is projected and the city is currently benefiting from an explosion in investment and development activity. Major office, residential and retail development projects worth £1.5bn are currently under construction and there’s a further £4.4bn worth of projects in the development pipeline.
