Small businesses are trailing behind larger companies when it comes to reducing their fleet carbon footprints, according to the Energy Saving Trust (EST).

The EST has calculated that if all businesses in the UK collectively switched to greener company cars then they would save almost £3bn a year through reduced fuel and tax bills.

Small firms have been advised to communicate effectively with staff to explain that the recession is the ideal time to implement cost efficiency procedures.

"Too many organisations believe that a greener fleet will cost them money, not save it. The reality is that a commitment to the environment is no longer an optional part of the business agenda," said Nigel Underdown, head of transport advice at the EST.

"An organisation greening its fleet not only displays strong corporate social responsibility, but will cut costs. With consumer and business spending being cut as the recession continues, many employees will appreciate lower company car tax bills, which can invariably be achieved through careful choice list compilation with no impact on vehicle status."
