Corporate data theft doubles in the last two years
Small businesses are being warned to protect their data following recent research by law firm Mishcon de Reya and KPMG revealing that corporate data theft cases doubled in the UK between 2006 and 2008.
The research discovered that in 70% of cases the data was taken by employees who left their firm to work for a rival company and 75% of the data stolen was customer or client-related information.
The most popular method used by employees to transfer stolen data is via email, with this accounting for 46% of data theft. The next most common method was hard copy print-outs, which accounted for 22% of cases. The use of USB memory sticks or data CDs was present in 9% of cases.
"The theft of sensitive and confidential information from businesses is happening right now all over the UK and on an ever increasing scale. History tells us that in difficult economic times, incidents of dishonesty rise," said Dan Morrison, partner in Mishcon de Reya's Fraud & Insolvency Group.
