The Federation of Small Businesses is calling for more help to assist small firms in taking on apprentices.

The lobby group believes apprentices should be paid the same rate as 16-18-year-olds in ordinary employment and called for better support to ensure apprentices complete their course.

According to a recent survey by the group, 82% of small business owners backed raising the wages of apprentices and 78% said they would employ more if there was financial support available from the government.

But only 5% were aware that they could receive compensation in return for giving apprentices time off to train.

"Small businesses place great value on an apprenticeship and are prepared to invest in them," said Colin Willman, FSB education and skills chairman.

"But they are often impeded by lengthy administration and the costs of providing training. Many are not aware about wage contribution for time off to train."
