People spend more time using communications devices than they did five years ago but prices are falling, according to a study by Ofcom.

The report found that the average person spends seven hours and nine minutes a day on the internet, using a mobile phone or watching television, with the latter accounting for three hours and 38 minutes.

But the average household spend on such facilities fell to £93.63 a month; a drop of £1.53 since 2006 and £4.31 since 2004. In 2002 the average spend stood at £89.36.

The research also revealed a surge in the number of ‘dongles' - which allow laptop users to access the internet on the move - as mobile phone companies started to compete with fixed-line broadband providers.

Sales increased from 69,000 a month in February 2008 to 133,000 in June.
