Takeaways and coffee shops are among the businesses that are prospering in the current economic climate, according to research into the spending habits of 20m Barclays customers.
The study found that spend on takeaways has increased by 50% year-on-year and cafes and coffee shops by 30% as customers looked for cheaper alternatives to eating out and other forms of entertainment.
But many other sectors are feeling the pressure, with florists, newsagents and off-licenses, hairdressers and beauticians all seeing a decline in takings. Sales of win are down by 45%, the data showed.
"It's no surprise that the nation's spending habits have been impacted by current consumer uncertainty," said John Davis, marketing director for Barclays Local Business.
"People are thinking more carefully about how they spend their disposable income, but savvy small firms which continue to manage their business prudently look set to survive and prosper."
