Bosses must plan for swine flu

Small business bosses are hastily planning for a big rise in staff absence following news yesterday that the number of swine flu cases has risen dramatically, with 55,000 new cases reported in the UK last week.

The government has estimated that, in the worst case scenario, approximately 12% of the UK workforce could be off sick over the coming months.

The surge in numbers has forced the NHS to set up a new National Pandemic Flu Service from next week where companies will be able to seek advice and guidance.

Bosses are planning for staff to be able to work from home by setting up remote access to email accounts and hiring or purchasing laptops for their workforce. They are also cross training staff to ensure there is sufficient skills cover in the place of work.

There is no doubt that swine flu is going to be a big burden on businesses over the coming months. With staff numbers already low due to holidays, small business owners will need to do all they can to minimise the effects on their business.
