Google has reported its highest quarterly profit and predicted that the worst of the global recession is now over.

The search engine giant reported net profit of £1bn between July and September, up 27% on the same period a year ago.

"While there is a lot of uncertainty about the pace of economic recovery, we believe that the worst of the recession is behind us and now feel confident about investing heavily in our future," said Eric Schmist of Google.
