With the announcement of Prince William's wedding for next year, speculation abounds over just how big an impact it will have on the still struggling British economy, with one particular forecast around 620 billion pounds.
Bosses within the tourism industry remain hopeful that foreign interest will generate additional revenue in landmarks outside of London, which have ties to the royals. In addition to the usual souvenirs, memento's and keepsakes such an event will produce, many believe that the event will take on more of a World Cup style feeling to the festivities, with increased spending on food and alcohol to toast the young couple.
"Retailers will rush to capitalise on the merchandising opportunities" said Neil Saunders, consulting director of retail researchers Verdict. " Food and grocery retailers could cash in to the tune of 360 million as consumers buy extra treats to celebrate the occasion as well as champagne to toast the happy couple"
The tourism industry could see an additional 216 million pound benefit.
"In total that means we are looking at a 620 million pound consumers pending boost.
"While that may sound like a lot, it should be remembered that this is a potentially massive event which will command not just the attention of Britons, but potentially most of the world."
