Libya Chaos continues

The situation in Libya has caused further large Oil prices rises due to production uncertanity in the region though Saudi Arabia could easily make up lost Libyan production, if it wanted to. The Saudi King Abdullah has just distributed some US $ 37 Billion in various benefits to the Saudi people to stave off possible unrest and spread of discontent.

Saudi Arabia  needs to be a solid foundation stone in the region, accounting as they do for around 10% of global oil production but capable of producing another 5% or so, if necessary. Any collapse in the current Saudi governing regime would cause global economic chaos but there is no sign of this happening.

Those just arriving in arriving in Britain from Libya, somewhat later than other European countries, speak of chaotic airport scenes in Libya as many thousands of people try to leave, with stories of non stop gunfire in the streets.

The choice of outcomes here isn't that encouraging. If Gadaffi manages to stay in control  he may put down any revolt with brutal force. Should he leave there will be a power vacuum and there is no natural succession party or totally dominant tribe in the Country.
