So it is National Work from Home day today, supported by the likes of the TUC, CBI and the British Chamber of Commerce.
I have often wondered how these days originate. Is there a body where you register you proposed "Day" or Week" and it comes up in front of a committee and gets approved or not? Or can anyone call for a " Day" ? and it is then up to you to get as many participants on board. And....... what about the people that already work from home what do they do?
Mother's day used to stand alone many moons ago and then the card manufacturers jumped on board and the whole family have their day now.
However, ahead of the olympics and possible disruption to your travel plans, it pays to test out whether you can support a Home Office from home, not as easy as you think.
Can you access your usual work files? There are security issues and then there is the small matter of your family probably thinking you have a day off so a strategy of sitting in the living room, totally accessible won't cut it.
Things are probably already resident in the garden shed that rustle about and distrurb the concentration, so you need to have a dedicated office space somewhere out of the way.
Motivation is a big consideration also. Some people are happy being unsupervised, others would reach for the TV remote, so measurement of what has actually happened work wise at home is very important.
Speaking as someone who had never worked from home in a long and varied career in the city of London until last year and now has the choice, I could easily never set foot on a rush hour train ever again but haven't got that far yet but here are some thoughts regarding home working.
- No Travelling and no 9 to 5 either, I tend to work more hours but have longer out of the "office" periods
- I work from various parts of the house but have a dedicated "office" that gives me a business area, frequently violated in a nice way. Coffee, sandwiches.
- Our company in on the Cloud so we can access our important information from anywhere.
- Office banter is a big thing that is lacking at home. Home banter isn't really banter, more a series of instructions I have to carry out.
- There are days when the domestic environment can swallow up your time if you let it. A lot to be said for the "at work" light to be on outside so you can work in peace.
- I go to the gym when it's quiet and play tennis ad hoc knowing I can make up the time later.
