The German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived in Athens on Tuesday, amidst riots, in a high profile visit to demonstrate support for the efforts that the Greek Goverment are making to action a tough austerity programme.

Merkel is seen by the Greek people as the root cause of all their hardships and the demonstrations in Athens are the worst for some time with over 250,000 people on the streets.

The visit is seen as a major sign that Germany do not want Greece to crash out of the Eurozone but the Greek economy is in serious trouble and will struggle to keep within the terms of the deal that releases tranches of bailout funds.

Without this money Greece is technically bankrupt but there are no signs that the funds they have received so far and the austerity measures implemented, are reversing the economic doom and gloom.
