The Egyptian President, Mohammed Morsi, has been deposed by the Egyptian Army and is being held along with senior members of his Muslim Brotherhood parliament, for "failing to meet the demands of the Egyptian people".

Announcements have been made on Egyptian television by the head of the Egyptian army and a temporary leader in place of Morsi, is expected to be ratified today ahead of new elections, while the Egyptian constitution has been suspended.

President Morsi has been an unpopular ruler, the first Islamic President and his one year in office has led to civil unrest over the manner in which he has attempted to extend his powers and Islamic influence throughout the fabric of Egyptian life, while presiding over a precipitous economic and social decline.

Celebrations are led by the protesters inTahrir square Cairo, mirrored in the other major Egyptian cities but there is great concern that both factions could end up in a head on conflict that could easily spiral out of control.
