The Office of National Statistics has reported lower figures for July than expected, with most economists going for 1.8% and the ONS reporting 1.6%, significantly lower than the 1.9% in June where the downward trend reversed but just for the month. The overall trend is downward with the current CPI comfortably lower than the Bank of England's target rate of 2% .

The main reason for the reduction is discounting on food, alcohol and clothing.
