Heathrow's new Terminal 5 has been officially opened by the Queen, marking the beginning of the end of a construction project that began in September 2002.

The terminal will open for business on March 27th and will provide extra passenger capacity for travellers, although the amount of flights coming in and out of the airport will not increase.

The new terminal cost £4.3bn to build and will allow BA to bring most of its flights under one roof.

Rival airline Virgin has complained about that BA will be the only company to benefit and described it as "fundamentally a great place to shop but not be a great place to travel from".

The official opening was for the first phase, which includes Terminals 5A and 5B. Terminal 5C will open in 2010.
