Staff waste years in wrong jobs

The average person spends almost five years in jobs that do not make the best use of their skills, according to a poll by the Skills Commission.

The research found that millions of years are wasted in this manner, with the average length of time spent in unsuitable positions four years and 10 months.

The poll claims one in five workers is currently in such a job and 41% have been in the past.

"We are shocked at the sheer depth of dissatisfaction Britons seem to feel for their work and how their skills are underutilised on a massive scale," said Andy Powell, a member of the organisation.

"We urge the government to listen very carefully to the recommendations of the Skills Commission. Information, advice and guidance for all adults and young people must be given the appropriate funding and political support it deserves."

Over half (59%) of those working in unsuitable jobs felt good quality careers advice could improve their lives, the research added.
