The British Red Cross is warning companies that do not have a trained first-aider on their books that they could face legal action in the event of a death.

Businesses are currently required by the Health and Safety Executive to provide adequate equipment, facilities and personnel to enable first aid to be given to workers who suffer an injury at work.

Under the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Bill, which will become law on 6th April, companies breaching health and safety management procedures will become liable for any fatalities that occur as a result of failing to implement the correct measures.

The charity is urging companies to take the introduction of the new law as an opportunity to tighten up health and safety procedures, including sending staff on first-aid courses.
