Raising money for a business in today's climate

I would be interested to hear people's thoughts and experiences on how to raise money in today's climate, whether its VC money, grants or traditional finance. We have a technology project that is about to go through this process and I have been directed to NESTA funding. Any thoughts on this as a viable route?
