Eureka Moment
I had been toying with the idea of a virtual assistant business since around September 2023 as I was getting fed up with my full time job. I'd always known I wanted to run my own business and when I parted ways with my employer in December 2023, the path seemed obvious, so I went for it.
Finance
I financed the business initially through the settlement I received from my employer and I have invested some personal funds from my inheritance. Choosing the wrong types of client has made my finance journey a challenge, however I set myself goals, the first of which I reached at the beginning of 2025. A brand new business takes a while to build - it is a marathon, not a sprint.
Regrets
I have absolutely no regrets about setting up this business. The journey so far has not been smooth however I have learnt some valuable lessons along the way, and I am glad to say my business is now on the right path and will continue to grow. I intend to expand to provide work opportunities for other self employed VAs under my brand, so we can grow stronger together.
What would you have changed?
I think I would have changed is my initial direction for the business which focused on sole traders, but realised that it was the wrong type of market for what I had to offer. I changed my offering last September to focus more on the SME market as my skills offer more value to these businesses.
