Rail fares in the UK are on average 50% higher than in the rest of Europe, according to a study by consumer watchdog Passenger Focus.

The study, the first ever to compare commuting and long-distance travel in Europe, found that UK annual season tickets for middle-distance commuters are almost double the price of France, the second most expensive country in Europe.

The majority of rail companies increased their fares at the start of the New Year, many by as much as 10%. This caused anger among business passengers, many of whom have no other option than to use the railway network in their commute to work.

"Commuters cannot be expected to continue paying above inflation fare increases year on year during a recession," said Andy Smith, chief executive of Passenger Focus.
