A franchisee of Domino’s Pizza has been accused of paying staff virtually nothing after making illegal deductions for accommodation and insurance costs, the T&G union claims.

The union claims Hungarian staff working at a franchise in Derby were exploited as they were constantly indebted to their employer. It claims one worker took home just £5 after four months' work and also claims to have a further six cases.

Domino’s Pizza strongly denies the claims, saying an inquiry had backed the franchise owner and eight members of staff had been sacked for failing to register on a government scheme for workers from new EU countries.

“Both Domino’s Pizza and the franchisee are fully aware of the procedures to recruit staff and ensure they have the right to work in the UK,” it said in a statement.
