The entrepreneur Sir John Harvey-Jones has died at the age of 83 after a long illness.

Harvey-Jones was chairman of chemical firm ICI but shot to wider fame with his role on the 1990s BBC television show Troubleshooter, in which he helped struggling businesses turn their fortunes around.

"He subsequently became the acceptable face of capitalism through his television programme and brought the world of business to millions in an accessible way," said Richard Lambert, director general of the Confederation of British Industry.

Between 1982 and 1987 he transformed ICI from a loss-making business to a company making a pre-tax profit of over £1bn.

Jones featured as the cover interviewee on New Business magazine in Winter 2002.
