Situated next to the Opera Metro station, the Paris Le Grande Hotel is nicely positioned. Enveloping one whole triangular block the hotel façade is indiscreet, whilst architecturally typically Parisian. Aptly named for both its size, and its history of hosting royalty since its construction in 1862. Guests visiting Paris via the Eurostar services to Gare Du Nord, will find the journey duration around 20 minutes, service dependent. Most of central Paris and its various districts all falling within range of a 30 minute metro ride of the hotel, making it both an excellent business hub, or sightseeing base. Within walking distance of the hotel, in addition to the opera house itself is the Louvre, heading south on Avenue De L'Opera for just under 20 minutes, and the famous Galeries Lafayette department store just a few minutes north.

As someone who travels extensively, I should mention that my personal preference when it comes down to city break or business trips tends to swing towards more modern, minimalist accommodation, or quaint boutique hotels. It did not take long for the staff and hospitality of Le Grande Hotel to force me to call this in to question. From check in to check out I don't think I remember a better customer service experience. Staff were pleasant, warm and full of advice and assistance and an obvious willingness to go above and beyond. This came as a genuine surprise to me as it has not always been my experience in the larger five star hotels. Further reinforcing that opinion was the bottle of champagne and tray of macarons waiting for us on the coffee table, as we opened the door to a spacious room with French windows that overlooked the central atrium.

Old fashioned but spotlessly clean and clearly well maintained, the décor combined rich royal blues and golds. By description alone you'd be forgiven for thinking it sounds a little garish, but it worked. Turndown service left us regular bottles of spring water, and maid services were polite and discreet.

Breakfast is served in the Café de la Paix, a world-famous restaurant with a substantial celebrity clientele. The continental breakfast spread is excellent, as well as being well equipped with more international offerings for their visitors from further afield.

Boasting 23 meeting rooms and a fully staffed business centre from 7am-10pm, Le Grande is an almost peerless choice of business hotel within central Paris. I've always considered the foundation of a five star hotel's reputation will ultimately rest on the shoulders of its staff, and customer service. On these merits, I will certainly return.
