When I was young we had a saying that if a car was "hotted" up it had a seriously quick engine.

These days it refers to the possibility of the vehicle catching fire, as Daimler's Mercedes joins Vauxhall in the hall of shame, recalling 1 million vehicles globally with defective parts potentially leading to a serious fire.

In November last year we had a specific model of the Vauxhall Corsa recalled, involving less than three thousand vehicles, after reports of vehicle fires involving those made during a specific time frame.

Now we have Mercedes recalling a million cars internationally, 75,000 of those in the UK, the recall not in place as yet, covering a number of models made between 2015 and 2017. More than 50 fires have been reported involving these vehicles, mostly from the US with none confirmed in the UK.

It is thought the starter mechanism could fail and overheat under specific and unusual conditions and the installation of an additional fuse may be the straightforward safety solution.
