Green Angel Syndicate today announced an investment in Alusid, a company which uses a patented process to manufacture sustainable, high-quality building materials by recycling industrial waste ceramics and glass which would otherwise go to landfill. Products are sold under the brand name SilicaStone. These materials can themselves be recycled at the end of their life, making this a genuine circular economy company.

Alusid has just raised £1.34 million from backers including Green Angel Syndicate. The funding is intended to support the design, planning and location of a new factory, which the company expects will transform its production capacity by 2020, creating over 70 jobs. Alusid is attracting strong interest, and currently has more than 100 projects in its pipeline. SilicaStone buyers include Amazon, Four Seasons Hotels, Nando's and Wells Fargo Bank which is using the material in its prestigious new London HQ.

Green Angels Chairman, John Hinnigan, comments: "We like Alusid a lot.  Its commitment to the circular economy combined with its unique technology is a winning formula for us and I am pleased that we have had the opportunity to invest at this stage of Alusid's development."

Co-founder of Alusid, Professor Binns explains: "While the arguments for embedding sustainability throughout the construction industry are well established, it often conflicts with a hunger for materials that offer new aesthetic properties. It is becoming increasingly important that alternative products are developed that both offer a striking visual appearance and are less reliant on virgin raw materials."

Alusid co-founder and chief operating officer, Dr Alasdair Bremner added: "Our product alleviates the reliance on quarrying high volumes of virgin stone and will dramatically increase the amount of manufactured glass which can be recycled."

Alusid [1] - a university spinoff company - was born from a research project with the aim of turning low value materials destined for landfill into beautiful surface products for use by architects and designers. The company aims to be a leader in the supply of premium engineered sustainable architectural materials and remains at the forefront of this growing sector through continuous research and development.
