Some 200 countries have agreed a raft of aims to be achieved alongside and within the overall 30/30 target.

This is to protect and conserve 30% of land, rivers, coastal waters and oceans, considered key, by 2030.

The landmark agreement was passed by the Chair of the conference, the Chinese minister of ecology and environment, Huang Runqiu. The event was hosted in Canada due to the current severe covid restrictions in China.

The deal resulted in the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) on the last day of Cop15. The aims of the GBF are to address biodiversity loss, restore ecosystems and protect indigenous rights. There are also hard won measures within the agreement to increase finance to developing countries.
