1)     Clean-up your subscriber lists

First and foremost, it's important to take a look at your subscriber lists. If you've got a collection of address that simply don't respond to your messages, don't be afraid to remove them. In the same way that rotting leaves in your rain gutters can clog up your system, so can dead addresses. Cutting out the deadwood will not only lead to improved performance of your campaigns (such as quicker send times and mailing costs), you can be sure your message is being read by those who are more likely to engage with you.

2)     Give your email template a lick of paint

Attractive emails can go a long way in achieving better open rates and improved sales. If it's not easy for your recipients to scan your newsletters to find what they want, it could probably do with a lick of paint. Matching your newsletter's colours and fonts to your website, adding new images or submitting a fresh layout will all help in regaining your subscribers' attention.

3)     Try something new

Spring is often the time when many of us try something new. In the email marketing world for example, many businesses continue with tried-and-tested email templates - ignoring the fact that mobile devices are being used more and more to access emails on the move. With that in mind, make sure your emails include mobile-friendly design elements like bigger buttons, short easy-to-read copy and larger text.

4)     Freshen up your content

It goes without saying, but tired, stale and repeated messages are likely to be ignored. If you want your recipients to engage with you, make sure you say something different and unique with each email, but remember to stay true to your core message. If you keep your content fresh, seasonal and relevant you're more likely to see action - so why not link your products or services to topical news stories or developments in your sector? The more topical your message the more likely it will be read, shared and forwarded to potential new customers.

5)     Polish up your offers

And finally, always offer something new with each email you send. If your traditional offers aren't hitting the mark, don't be afraid to tweak them to see if you get a better response. Everyone loves a deal, so promote offers that are just for subscribers - they'll open your emails for sales they can't get anywhere else. However, make sure your call to action is clear but also what recipients can expect when they click through - this can be as simple as "Click here for a 20% discount on your next order."
