50% of workers see pay, hours or benefits reduced
More than half of UK workers have experienced a cut in pay, hours or a loss of employment benefits since the recession began, according to a survey of over 1,500 workers by the Keep Britain Working Campaign.
The survey found that 28% of workers have seen their pay decrease, 25% have experienced a reduction in hours and 23% have lost some employee benefits. 37% of UK workers have been through one of these changes, 12% have experienced two of them and 5% have experienced all three.
With unemployment standing at over two million for the first time in a decade and predicted to rise to over three million, measures such as cutting pay and reducing staff hours are vital tools to help curb job losses.
"The UK workforce has demonstrated unprecedented flexibility during this recession, allowing organisations to explore a whole range of cost-cutting responses other than relying solely on redundancies," said James Reed, founder of the Keep Britain Working Campaign.
