British Airways asks staff to work for free
British Airways has asked its workforce of 40,000 to work without pay to help the airline survive in the economic downturn.
BA, which recently recorded a record loss of £400m for 2008, has asked staff to volunteer for between one-week and one month's unpaid leave or unpaid work.
"I am looking for every single part of the company to take part in some way in this cash-effective way of helping the company's survival plan," said Willie Walsh, BA chief executive.
In the recession increasing numbers of employers are asking staff to take pay cuts or unpaid leave in order to try and restrict job losses.
