Government approve third runway for Heathrow
Transport Secretary Geoff Hoon has announced that the government has approved plans to build a third runway at Heathrow Airport.
The plan has been backed by the majority of UK businesses, who believe that the expansion is necessary in order to ensure that the country does not loose vital business.
Environmental campaigners, who argue that the new runway would make it impossible for the UK to meet legally required carbon emission reductions implemented by the EU, oppose the new runway.
"It's a classic dilemma - we want to forge ahead in implementing our climate change ambitions when others are not, but we don't want to lose our economic competitiveness in the process," said business secretary Lord Mandelson.
The construction of the third runway is unlikely to start until 2015. However, this date may be delayed for a number of years or the project may be abandoned as protestors have vowed to mount a legal challenge against the decision.
