Government plans to increase apprenticeships
The government has launched a pilot project designed to increase the number of apprenticeships in the UK.
The Apprenticeship Expansion Programme will provide employers with access to more than £10m over the next three years and will be delivered through the Learning and Skills Council.
Funding will be available to companies of all sizes that can demonstrate a track record of running such schemes and will cover costs such as wages, training and management time.
"Given the current economic slowdown, it is important that companies continue training their staff to maintain productivity and a competitive edge," said David Way, national director of apprenticeships at the LSC.
"Employing apprentices is an ideal way for businesses to position themselves as leaders for the recovery. The new funding will make it easier for businesses to do this and provide the opportunity for industry sectors to successfully fill their existing skills gaps."
The government has said it wants to create 400,000 apprentices in England by 2020.Post Date: December 1st, 2008
