Government warned on small firms
A leading accountancy body has warned the government not to ignore small businesses when it formulates enterprise policy.
ACCA has sent a letter to ministers at the Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (DBERR) pointing out that small businesses are the "real creators of employment, wealth and economic growth in the UK".
The organisation is concerned that a possible enterprise bill - on which the government is currently consulting - and a 10-year strategy for enterprise will promote internationalisation and big business at the expense of smaller firms.
"While many medium-sized businesses may well have the potential to grow, it is worth remembering that in the last five years for every job created by a medium-sized firm, the small business sector created nearly 37," said Professor Robin Jarvis, head of small business affairs at ACCA.
