Let's hope that the people behind the organisation of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations have a hand in the Olympics also, because the whole thing was awesome, though the benefits to UK Plc are always difficult to quantify. Sometimes it's just best to enjoy it and say "I was there".

On the debit side, bank holidays cost a couple of billion or thereabouts and the monarchy adds to the bill but the monarch of the UK stands for stability, currently for 60 years, no bad thing when Presidents and Prime ministers come and go like a red london bus.

On the plus side of the balance sheet, this translates into confidence, even in an economy that is less than perfect and gives the country branding that Richard Branson would envy for sure.

Yes the French had a side show tennis competition, that threw up some memorable moments in opposition but I am sure they look across the channel and have regrets at rebranding a few centuries ago.

Nothing wrong in having buckets of feel good factor spread around and the Diamond Jubilee celebrations will be remembered globally for a long long time indeed.
