Mobile World Congress kicks off
With around 1500 exhibitors and around 60,000 visitors expected, the Mobile World Congress (MWC) opened up in Barcelona yesterday.
The heavyweights in the handset market are well represented with Nokia unveiling a phone with a camera of 41 mega pixels but tied in to Nokia's own Symbian operating system, rather than the much more popular Android OS.
Interestingly at the MWC, Vodafone is asking for a halt to the amount of rules and regulations that are hitting the mobile carriers, designed in part to curb the huge cross border charges business men can face when travelling through Europe. Why should your mobile phone costs suddenly triple when you use your phone in another country?
There are ways around it, buying a local simcard being one of them but with the shift to mobile business increasing, this needs urgent attention and maybe the solution will be found at the MWC, before the regulators use the big regulatory stick to force the costs down.
