New car sales decline 17.5%
New car sales in the UK declined sharply in August, the second consecutive month that figures have fallen, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
There were just over 55,000 new cars registered in August, a drop of 17.5% compared to the same month last year.
Although the figure is low August traditionally sees the lowest volume of monthly sales ahead of September's launch of the new registration plate.
SMMT have warned that the market would remain tough for the rest of the year but still expects more than two million new cars to be sold in 2010.
"The industry enjoyed a better-than-expected first half of the year and, despite the difficulties, SMMT is forecasting that new car registrations will close just ahead of 2009 figures," said SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt.
