New cars sales rise 11%
Sales of new cars increased 11% in September compared to the same month last year, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
The SMMT have said that conditions remain "challenging" but that the market was being supported by the scrappage scheme, which the government recently announced has been extended by an extra £100m to £400m.
The initiative was originally scheduled to end by February or when the £300m the government had allocated the scheme ran out.
"The extension of the scheme will help to sustain demand through the latter part of this year and into 2010. This will allow economic recovery to strengthen and safeguard valuable industrial capability," said Paul Everitt, chief executive of the SMMT.
The scheme gives consumers £2,000 off a new car - provided equally by the government and the car manufacturer - if they trade in a car that is at least ten years old. The scheme has been a success and over 225,000 new cars have been ordered through it since its introduction in May this year.
