Small firms lack first-aid skills
Half of all small businesses remain unaware of changes to health and safety regulations that will come into force in October 2009, according to research by the British Red Cross.
Under the new structure, guidelines on the number and category of trained first-aiders will change and businesses will be expected to be aware of their new responsibilities.
The British Red Cross believes small companies are most at risk of falling foul of the regulations, and is urging them to invest in first-aid training ahead of the new rules.
"Ensuring that your employees learn first aid is so much more than just complying with your health and safety obligations," says Anna Brown, head of customer services for British Red Cross First Aid Training.
"Encouraging people to learn a life-saving skill shows your commitment to the employee and also to the well being of your whole team.
"The confidence and motivation that it can give to these individuals is invaluable both in and out of the working environment."
