Small firms still confused by Data Protection Act
The government is failing to help small businesses understand the Data Protection Act, according to recent research commissioned by Invu and conducted by YouGov.
Almost 10 years after the law first came into effect around a quarter of UK SMEs are unsure over the technicalities or do not believe that their company is compliant with the act.
The Act gives individuals in the UK the right to know what information is held about them by organisations, and businesses that do not comply can recieve a large fine.
The survey revealed that many small firms don't fully understand the act, with over 35% stating that they did not realise it covers both paper-based documents as well as electronic documents.
"The premise of the Data Protection Act is very solid but implementing and managing it is not quite so clear, so it's little wonder that many SMEs are confused," said David Morgan, CEO of Invu.
"Small to medium sized businesses often don't have the time, budget or resources to ensure that they are totally compliant with legislation, so they can often take a ‘head in the sand' approach."
