Business owners in the UK are more conscious than ever of keeping their travel costs down, according to a survey by American Express.

The survey revealed that 78% of company owners are more aware of their travel costs than before the recession hit.

Of those firms that changed their business travel to save costs, 47% have saved up to 20% of their annual travel budget, with over a fifth having saved between 21% and 30%.

Just under half of employees said that their boss consciously looked to cut travel costs through such means as downgrading from business class flights and taking the train rather than flying.

Asking staff to take public transport rather than taxis and downgrading hotel choices from four to three star also emerged as popular measures used to cut costs.

However, the survey also found that high standards need not always be compromised, with 14% reporting that their company offers flying one way in economy but the other in business so employees are refreshed and ready for meetings.
