In the last few years the way in which many countries around the world give out visas has changed quite a bit, so you need to make sure that you are on board with all of the changes. The new visa is an electronic form visa, which is called the eTa, we have put together some answers to the most common questions asked about the eTa, to help you make sure that you understand what you need to do.

What is The eTa?

The Canada eTa is simply your visa that will allow you access to Canada, it is a digital visa which can be applied for and obtained online. This was introduced in 2015 and it not only speeds up the visa application process, it also offers a great option for national security, to properly vet visitors who are coming into the country.

Do I Need One?

The only people who need an eTa are those who come from visa exempt nations, this generally covers the majority of foreign nationals that travel to Canada each year, but if you are not sure you can check whether or not you need one on this webpage. It is worth noting that citizens of the USA do not need the eTa, just identification.

How Do I Apply?

Application is very simple and can be done online directly from the Canadian government's eTa site. During the application process you will need to answer questions about who you are, what your intention is for heading to Canada, and what your plans are whilst you are there. You will usually receive a message within minutes of completing your application, letting you know if you were successful.

When Should I Apply?

Although it may only take a few minutes for a response, there is always a risk that you could be rejected, which will see you needing to go to the embassy to iron things out. For this reason you should look to apply at least one month before your trip.

Reasons For Refusal?

People are refused an eTa for a number of reasons, it could be because of a criminal record, suspicion of terrorist activities, membership to certain organizations or if the applicant has an illness which could endanger public health such as tuberculosis. If you are refused and you can't understand why, it could be that someone with the same name as yours has a criminal record, this is why you will need to go to the embassy.

How Long Does it Last?

The eTa once approved, it will be valid for 5 years, and there is no limit on how many times you can visit the country during this time.

How Much?

The cost of an application will be a $7, non-refundable payment, this is the same price for both adults and children of all ages.

Hopefully this has cleared up some questions which you may have had about the eTa, whatever you do, don't forget to sort it out before you go.
