Imagine the time you take selecting furniture, what fits, the style; and then by adding the right lighting how everything comes together. Lighting is perhaps the most powerful factor when it comes to decorating, everything becomes illuminated. We have some tips below on how to make a well-lit space when you embark upon a change of Interiors.

Change It up

Layered lighting:  Light your spaces in different ways. Perhaps overhead, accent, and task lighting. In the living room a decorative ceiling fixture in the centre could be a good place to start. Add some downlights to softly illuminate the walls, curtains, and pictures. Soffit or valance lighting, and uplighters can bounce light playfully off the ceiling. Accent lights are used to emphasize art, and table lamps positioned opposite each other provide yet another layer of light.

Keep your kitchen bright and clean

The kitchen is one place where bright light trumps atmospheric lighting. Fill the space with even light by placing high-hats or recessed lights around the ceiling's edge. Add some under-cabinet lighting, installing LED light strips on the bottom of your top cabinets is the simplest method for an evenly lit counter surface, essential for food preparation and cooking.

Which way are you facing?

It's quite easy if you have a south facing room and receive glorious sunshine. If north-facing then here are some tried and tested strategies. Try a central chandelier that disperses light horizontally. And combine this with recessed lamps around the perimeter of a north-facing living room. Table lamps can be for the gloomy places, and use sconces to highlight your art work. For dark bedrooms, again, a central chandelier with subtle up-lights in the corners. Elegant bedside lamp(s) for reading, and if you have a fireplace then go with a pair of sconces above the mantelpiece.

The most important room (the bathroom)

Use wall-mounted sconces set about 66 inches off the ground to provide even illumination to see your face. Combine this with motion-lighting at the cabinet base, giving a nice calming glow for when you wake up in the middle of the night. Also consider hanging a sculptural pendant lamp for intimacy and spa-like simplicity. Hanging design lights for the bathroom can convert a windowless bathroom into a dramatic backdrop. The light itself is a magnificent object that greets the eye upon entering the space and adds focus to the free-standing bath. LED strip lighting is hidden under floating shelves to cast a soft glow across the chevron-patterned floor.
