I am involved in enough sports to be considered fit but old enough to add to that statement "for my age". I play a little badminton, a lot of squash and cycle. All this activity used to be enough to stave off any thoughts of ill health but only the experts can tell you what is really going on inside.

The fact is we spend more on getting our cars serviced than we do looking after our own bodies, a cost that's just not factored in and should be. Especially when we have a very stretched health service that does its best with the resources at its disposal.

For peace of mind and being the kind of guy that hardly ever sees the inside of a doctor's surgery, I booked a full and very complete health check up with the Health Insurance Group (using its screening partner Prevent PLC) which deals with businesses of all sizes. It could have been held in the office but I asked for the health screening to take place at home and I felt relaxed and enjoyed the complete experience that took about two hours. A far cry from the ten minute allotment at the local GP, usually two weeks ahead at best, unless you are at death's door, then it's just a week.

Format

The screening is very thorough and it was so nice to have a series of results (not all of them) immediately. With zero medical training, I am not going into detail but there were a multitude of tests that form the basis of a discussion afterwards, of what they term is a "snap shot of your health at a given moment in time". It went so much further than monitoring your blood composition, blood pressure, lung capacity, heart condition and fitness and I felt confident listening to the suggestions made around tweaking my lifestyle and eating habits at the end that they were tailor-made for me.

Just over a week later, I received an extremely comprehensive ten page report of the health check, which covered their findings and recommendations regarding diet, exercise and relaxation techniques.

The results further bolstered my confidence in the whole procedure and that I had done the right thing if a little late, and need to make this more regular as part of a strategy for the business.

How did I do?

I already had enough reassurance from the après health check discussion that I was in good shape but not in perfect condition, and that removed any anxiety as to what the report might reveal, with suggestions to improve those points where I needed to act and the report was very thorough. I don't expect my urine composition to interest greatly but it was the subject of nine separate tests and this level of detail reflects throughout the health check.

There is no such thing as an immortality pill but it is possible to live longer and have a better quality of life with a little thought, no matter what your age. I left it very late, I suggest you try not to and prevention is always going to be better than cure, so why not contact the experts below and discuss your needs. They cover self-employed, small and large businesses and may just change the way you think about the way you and your business approach health management, privately and for your company.
