New report ranks how hard UK cities will be hit by recession
Cities throughout the UK have been ranked by how hard the recession is likely to hit them, according to a report issued by think-tank Centre for Cities.
The think-tank has published Cities Outlook, which assesses the health of 64 of the country's largest UK cities and evaluates how hard they will be hit by the recession by giving them a rating of red, amber or green.
The cities on red saw the fastest rises in numbers of people on job seekers allowance and were predominantly in Scotland and the north of England, with Hull and Wigan faring badly.
Most of the cities ranked at the top of the survey to fare best in the current economic climate are small cities around London, such as Reading and Aldershot.
"Each city needs its own frontline action plan, to keep jobs and retrain workers - and more powers over economic development," said Dermot Finch, director of the Centre for Cities.
