UK unemployment reaches over 2m for first time in over a decade
UK unemployment has risen over 2m for the first time since 1997, according to figures released from the Office for National Statistics.
During the three months to January the total number of people unemployed stood at 2.03m, an increase of 165,000 from the previous quarter. In February the number of people claiming jobseeker's allowance increased by over 138,000 to reach just under 1.4m.
A recent report from the Trade Union Congress (TUC) revealed that there are an average of ten job seekers for every vacancy in the UK, and in 25 different council areas there are more than 20 unemployed people per job.
"There is a vital need for steps specifically aimed at preventing a damaging loss in our industrial skills base. Temporary measures such as wage subsidies need to be seriously considered," said David Kern, chief economist at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC).
