From team introductions to proper training, onboarding is a crucial element of HR. So, here's how to onboard new staff to ensure they settle in quickly.

Prepare their workspace

Make sure your new hire's workspace is fully functional before they arrive. Their laptop should be set up and ready to use and any necessary equipment such as a mouse, keyboard, and second monitor should be in place. It's also important to provide a comfortable chair and ergonomic additions, like a laptop stand, to ensure they have a supportive and comfortable working environment.

If your employee is entirely remote, be sure to send them everything they need ahead of their first day.

Familiarise them with the employee handbook

New employees should be made aware of all policies and procedures, as well as any essential company information. It's best to send this in advance of their start date to give them the time to read through it thoroughly.

You should also ensure they have a clear understanding of other key details like when and how they get paid. If you're using the right PAYE software, paydays should be accurate and consistent, making this process quick and easy.

Set clear expectations

It's difficult for a new employee to motivate themselves if they don't have a comprehensive idea of what is expected of them. From outlining their job responsibilities to stating both short and long-term goals, they should know exactly what they need to do to progress.

Make introductions

Stepping into an office full of people who have already established relationships can be daunting. It's important that you introduce your new hire to other staff members and allow them time to get to know everyone in the company, particularly those who they are going to be working more closely with.

Proper onboarding is essential

A new hire's first few days sets the tone for the rest of their time at the company. By preparing their workspace ahead of their arrival, making them aware of policies and key details about their employment, setting clear expectations, and making proper introductions, you can ensure your new hire hits the ground running.
